In the algorithm, through the abovementioned six steps, the population will be gradually evolved generation by generation. When the number of generation (Gen) reaches a predetermined maximum number of evolutionary generations (MAXGEN), the algorithm will be stopped and the chromosome with the largest AUC in the population will be taken as the optimal solution.

Figure 3.4 shows the flowchart for the algorithm for setting multiple cutoff levels. The GA chromosomes represent combinations of various cutoff levels that are used to discretise the continuous detection data of tumour markers. The rule set is then obtained from the discretised data by using the attribute reduction method of rough set theory. Thereafter, for each multiple cutoff levels scheme (chromosome), its Area can be calculated and used to evaluate its diagnosis accuracy. The evolution search capability of GA can result in a continuous increase in the diagnosis accuracy over generations. When the termination condition is met, the chromosome with the largest Area will be derived which corresponds to the optimal combination of multiple cutoff levels for tumour markers.
